Kiwi Kids have a strong environmental awareness and a cultural affinity with beaches and ocean life. Our country, New Zealand is one of the closest to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, a natural wonderland for whales, dolphins and other marine life. Visitors come to our shores to watch in wonder and to swim with these mammals. We read to our kids Maori Legends associated with whales. We have produced a world famous movie "The Whale Rider".
Yet, close to our backyard within an International Whale Sanctuary, whales are being taken from us and species are threatened.
At Our Lady Star of the Sea School, we felt the children deserved to learn more about these amazing mammals and the issues surrounding their survival. Through our children we could involve and teach others, and together we could reach out beyond our shores to children in other nations in a friendly and respectful way, to display our knowledge and care of whales. It's the children that will help make a difference for everyone's future.
So that's how it all began......And then came along Barbara Todd whom let us use her amazing World of Whales Resource, and Cabbage Tree Creative who developed this wonderful website to help spread the word - that "Nature is the ultimate Miracle upon this Earth".
